Yesterday Larissa, Niko, Shade and I wandered to downtown C______ to check out a little bakery cafe coffee house I spotted..  While inside I found a flier for an open poetry night, so I sat down at my desk to see if there was anything recent I could bring to read.  Shade paced in small polite circles under the new desk until I remembered that she needed a bed down there, thank you very much, so she could sleep at my feet..  What I found wasn't recent.. 2000 was a good year for poetry for me.. and I haven't produced much since then.  Blogging it seems is a poor excuse. :-)

But here is an old friend.. appropriate for memorial day I think.  Happy Summer everyone.

Sometimes a Path is Just A Path

I walk out into a restless summer twilight
The long, narrow, urban wild space behind my house
Broken windows-- faint shards glittering
Weeds, grass, an abandoned car

The long, narrow, urban wild space behind my house
Tastes like wilderness on the skin
Weeds, grass, an abandoned car
Evening’s caress under a canopy of elms

Tastes like wilderness under the skin
Grass journeying from soft green to sharp pale brown
Evening’s caress under a canopy of elms
Skinny wisps of cloud, almost velvet blue-black sky

Grass journeying from soft green to sharp pale brown
Arms out straight, hands open, eyes starring ahead
Skinny wisps of cloud, almost velvet blue-black sky
Little bits of earth leap onto my sandaled toe

Arms out straight, hands open, eyes starring ahead
My horizon: house, sky, dirt, and driveway
Little bits of earth leap onto my sandaled toe
Shadow of a rose bush, shadow of lilacs, the path

My horizon: house, sky, dirt, and driveway
Feet obscured, I trust my step
Shadow of a rose bush, shadow of lilacs, the path
just a direction --a smoothing of the way

Feet obscured, I trust my step
Fill my lungs with the evening air
just a direction --a smoothing of the way
This is what I have learned about the coming night

Fill my lungs with the evening air
Broken windows-- faint shards glittering
This is what I have learned about the coming of night
Walk out into that restless summer twilight
